WALLS AND CEILINGS

Nothing should be stuck on a wall, which damages and/or stains the paintwork or wallpaper. Do not put a dab of paint on a wall or ceiling to cover a mark, because new paint of the 'same colour' never matches the colour of old paint. Unless a specific touch up patch or mark is listed in the Inventory, walls and/or ceilings with damage, including pinholes, will require repairing and repainting to the original standard. Marks on walls, light switches and doors can often be carefully wiped off with an appropriate cleaning product.

CARPETS, CURTAINS & OTHER FURNISHINGS

Carpet(s) were either new or shampooed prior to the start of your tenancy, so you should borrow a hot water extraction cleaner or hire e.g. a 'Rug Doctor' from Homebase or Tesco or employ a company to clean the carpets, including the stair carpet. Cleaning carpets can take several hours, because often only half a room can be cleaned and left to dry, before moving furniture and cleaning the other half. Clean any carpets at least 3 days before your checkout. Retain hire or professional cleaning receipts for the checkout

Clean furnishings, such as curtains or furniture covers at a low temperature. If in doubt dry clean, otherwise they may shrink and need replacing. If necessary, carefully iron fabric and then re-hang or re-cover furniture. Retain dry cleaning receipts for the checkout.

Compensation to us may be due to replace badly stained or damaged carpets and remove stains and/or shampoo carpets and clean curtains and furnishings that haven't been cleaned.

STAINED AND/OR DAMAGED MATTRESS

We check all sides of your mattress. If your mattress is stained or damaged you may have to pay compensation towards a new mattress, unless it is at the end of its life. See guideline charges.

DEFECTIVE LIGHT BULBS AND FLUORESCENT TUBES

At the checkout all lightbulbs, including desk lamp, oven, fridge and cooker hood bulbs need to be in working order.

WHAT CAN I LEAVE BEHIND IN THE HOUSE?

A reasonable quantity of cleaning products, extra coat hangers and pins on noticeboards. Do not leave electrical items such as toasters, kettles, irons or crockery, cutlery, food, herbs etc.
